Interviewees need to practise active listening.

Interviewees need to practise active listening.

In the British sitcom 'Allo 'Allo!, Michelle Dubois used to say, "Listen very carefully, I shall say zis only once."

Children will say to a parent, "Yes Mummy, but you're not listening with your eyes or your face."

Hands up anyone who went through education without hearing the words "Will you please listen to what I'm saying and pay attention!"

Of course we don't expect interviewers to precede what they say with these little statements to gain our attention during an interview and yet the messages these statements convey are so incredibly important for interviewees.

Make good eye contact.

Listen carefully and thoughtfully.

Use your facial expressions to advantage.

Learn to "read" the questions and the interviewer!

Ensure your body language shows you're paying attention.
